DAGUPAN CITY — A barangay chairman of Dagupan is in serious condition at a local hospital after he was shot and wounded by a lone gunman that barged into the barangay hall at 2:45 p.m. on Friday (June 13).

Barangay Chairman Jake Ignacio Reyes Jr. of Tapuac in Dagupan sustained one gunshot wound above his chest and was rushed to a nearby hospital where he is now being operated on under tight guard.

Reyes is on his first term as barangay captain after succeeding his father and namesake Jake Reyes Sr.

who ruled Barangay Tapuac for three terms.

Superintendent Christopher Abrahano, chief of police, said initial investigation showed that the lone gunman entered the barangay hall and went up to the second floor where Reyes was holding office.

After the first volley of gun fire, the victim managed to run downstairs while the suspect chased him. The suspect tried to shoot Reyes once more but his hand gun allegedly jammed.

The suspect escaped on foot then later boarded a tricycle whose driver was believed by the police to be his accomplice.

Elements of the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) were called to the crime scene to assist in the investigation of the case.

Abrahano said there were witnesses to the incident and the footage of a Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) camera may help in the early solution of the case.
