Trudeau discusses EJK issues with Duterte

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he discussed the issues of extrajudicial killings (EJKs) in the Philippines with President Rodrigo Duterte.

In a press conference on Tuesday, the Prime Minister said he and Duterte had a chance to converse before the ASEAN-Canada 40th Anniversary Commemorative Summit.

“I also mentioned human rights, rule of law, and specifically, extrajudicial killings as being an issue Canada is concerned with,” Trudeau said.

When asked about Duterte’s reaction, Trudeau answered, “Duterte was receptive of my comments.

Throughout, it was a cordial and positive exchange.”

Trudeau added that his conversation with Duterte shouldn’t come as surprise as Canada is known for bringing forth discussions regarding the rule of law and human rights.
