MANILA — Recycled plastic spoons and forks and plastic bottles take center stage in the main outdoor Christmas tree of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) main office in Manila for this year.

The central bank has been using recycled materials for its Christmas decorations for some years now and this, BSP Governor Nestor A. Espenilla Jr. said, is one way of helping the environment.

Aside from plastic utensils, other recycled materials used for this year’s decorations are used iron bars, scrap bars and rope lights, he said.

“This only shows that we can celebrate and decorate while saving the environment…that little creativity and creativeness can go a long way,” he said in a speech read by Monetary Board Member Juan D. De Zuñiga, Jr. during the lighting ceremony Thursday night.

Architect Marie Martinez, BSP Facilities Management and Engineering Department Acting Deputy Director, said the central bank has been using recycled materials for its Christmas decors for about four years now.

She said collecting and cleaning the materials as well as conceptualization starts as early as January.

Ideas for the Christmas decorations are presented to utility personnel, who in turn give additional inputs, she said.

Martinez said using recycled materials is among the advocacies of the BSP to help the environment and make the decorations cost-effective. (PNA)
