MANILA — An education technology startup based in Cagayan de Oro City providing cloud-based grading platform to schools won the Pitch Jerusalem competition, and would represent the Philippines in a global startup competition in Israel next month.

Wela School Systems’ grading platform allows teachers to upload their existing class record spreadsheets and automatically generate the necessary reports and analytics needed by the school and the Department of Education (DepEd).

“With our platform, we have improved their efficiency and productivity from weeks to an average of two days,” John Vincent Fiel, Co-Founder of Wela School Systems, said in an interview on Thursday.

“Teachers will now have more time for their students and family. They don’t have to go overtime in school. They can access the platform anywhere,” Fiel said.

Apart from the cloud-based grading platform, Wela also provides radio-frequency identification (RFID) systems to schools.

“The student taps their RFID/ID to the kiosk/RFID device, and then our system will notify the parent whether their student/child went in/out of the school. The parent will be notified to our Mobile app,” Fiel added.

Their parent’s mobile application is able to track student’s attendance, student’s homework, academic grades, read school feeds from the school, and receive announcements from the school.

The startup, which is operating more than two years, is now serving eight private schools in Cagayan de Oro City and nearby cities, and is currently scaling in Luzon.

Itamar Gero, president of Israel Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ICCP), said “Israel has innovation and creativity in its DNA and it is our mission to share this here and help to cultivate the startup environment.”

The ICCP and the Embassy of Israel organized the Pitch Jerusalem competition to search for the Philippine representative in the Start Jerusalem 2017 global competition slated in Jerusalem, Israel on November 5-11.

Wela School Systems will take part in an innovation experience with workshops and sessions designed to take their startup to the next level.
