Pinoy Comforts

Since Saturday, Metro Manila and its neighboring areas have been pummeled by the steady pour of torrential rains brought about by the southwest monsoon which was further intensified by Tropical Storm ‘Maring’ – the best supporting actress of all weather events.

We Filipinos take pride in being one of the happiest races in Asia, if not the world. We surely know how to turn something bad into something fun or funny and we always – always – look at the brighter side of things.

Family Bonding

Leah Sasing posted the photo above on her Instagram account. Her family lives just about three kilometers from the nefarious Marikina River. In 2009, their home was assaulted by terrible floods brought by Typhoon ‘Ondoy’ and last year during the monsoon season, floods invaded their home not just once but twice. So, this year, they’re not taking any chances. Together with her family, Leah propped their furniture and appliances above the ground – including her beloved piano.

“We’re praying that the flood from the swollen river will not enter our house tonight but we’re preparing nonetheless,” shares Leah.

Comfort Food

When the rains start pouring, you’ll surely see numerous photos of steaming sopas, heartwarming lugaw, scrumptious champorado, or a cup o’ joe on your Facebook timeline. Pinoys are known foodies and will not let the rainy season pass by without sampling rainy day staples.

And with the advent of technology, those staples will surely go to their Instagram feed first before making its way to their bellies.

Aquatic Activities

Admit it, we Filipinos love making the best out of what we have or the situation we’re in. It is indeed better than sulking in a corner, right?

So, when the rains come, kids run out to welcome millions of drops and play tag with their friends under the rain. You can even see kids swimming in waist- or chest-deep flood – which isn’t exactly hygienic, but ask them and they’ll surely tell you they’re having a blast.
