MANILA — The country celebrated World Teachers’ Day (WTD) Thursday, honoring teachers’ sacrifices and contributions in education.

The Department of Education (DepEd) also celebrated the occasion and the National Teachers’ Day (NTD) through an event held at the Ibalong Centrum for Recreation in Legazpi City, Albay.

With the NTD’s theme, “Gurong Pilipino: Kaakbay sa Progreso”, thousands of educators from across the country attended the event.

Different Filipino artists paid tribute to the teachers, while mentors themselves showcased their talents via the Teachers Got Talent competition.

It may be recalled that the month-long NTD observance was launched at the DepEd Central Office last September through the unveiling of a special postal stamp with an illustration of Filipino teachers and students.

The special postal stamp was designed by Rodin Theodore, and can be availed for PHP12 until September 4, 2018. It can be bought at the Manila Central Post Office and all postal areas of the Philippine Postal Corporation.

The NTM is being observed in the country from September 5 to October 5, pursuant to Presidential Proclamation no. 242. This aims to honor the teachers and acknowledge their role and commitment in nurturing the students.

DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones noted that the celebration is a time to give recognition to the teachers.

She said that teachers must encourage their students to deal with things and solve their problems.

DepEd NCR, on the other hand, held an advance celebration of the WTD last Monday, so as not interfere with the celebration of different schools and the one scheduled in Albay.

More than 5,000 elementary and high school teachers attended the advance WTD observance that DepEd NCR has organized at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.

During the event, DepEd Assistant Secretary Tonisito Umali challenged the educators to continue their efforts in instilling knowledge and skills to their students.

Meanwhile, netizens from various social media platforms also celebrated the WTD and NTD by thanking their former professors and acknowledging their contributions to help them reach where they are now.
