Dumapong-Ancheta gets gold in ‘over 86-kg powerlifting event’
KUALA LUMPUR — Adeline Dumapong-Ancheta gave the Philippines a gold medal in powerlifting when she topped the women’s over 86-kg event on Thursday in the 9th ASEAN Para Games.
The 43-year-old athlete from Kiangan, Ifugao Province submitted a best lift of 116kg , which is two kilograms short of the ASEAN Para Games record, during the competition held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibit Centre (MITEC) in Jalan Duta.
Meanwhile, Indonesian Sriyanti lifted 105kg in her second attempt to clinch the silver medal while Malaysian Sharifah Raudzah Syed Akil settled for the bronze medal after she lifted 95kg in the third round.
Thailand’s Netsuda Panna lifted 84kg to finish fourth while Malaysian Normyra Azni Rosli lifted 50kg for fifth place.
The Philippines also won a bronze medal courtesy of Agusto Kitan in the men’s 65kg event.
Dumapong-Ancheta became the first Filipino lifter to win a medal in the Paralympics when she bagged the bronze medal in the 82.5kg event in Sydney (2000).
She was a silver medalist in the 2014 Asian Paralympics in Incheon, South Korea.
Dumapong, who was three years old when she contracted polio, has a 15-year-old daughter.
