TOKYO, Japan — Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae during his official visit to Tokyo on Friday, March 6, strengthening the partnership between Canada and Japan.
The two leaders announced, following their meeting, the new Comprehensive Strategic Partnership that will bolster bilateral development across defence, energy, critical minerals, trade, and technology.
The partnership was said to reinforce collaboration and attract more capital into Canada, therefore giving greater depth and opening more opportunities to explore.
Takaichi and Carney mutually agreed that strengthening the relationship between Ottawa and Tokyo presents “enormous opportunities” for greater security, stability, and prosperity for the two middle powers caught in today’s more dangerous and uncertain world.
“Together, we are strengthening our economic security, securing resilient supply chains in critical minerals and clean energy, and deepening security and defence cooperation in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific,” Carney said.
“By expanding and modernising our partnership, we are creating long-term opportunities for our workers and building a more secure and resilient future for both countries,” he added.
Carney’s recent official visit to Japan marks his first since taking office. The visit was also the last stop of his latest engagements with other foreign powers, namely, India and Australia.
