In a world where people are increasingly isolated behind screens, a small but rapidly growing card shop in Richmond, British Columbia is proving that community spaces still matter. The Trading Gallery, founded by local entrepreneur Kris Yong, has become more than a store that sells trading cards. It has become a gathering place where friendships are formed, cultures are shared, and memories are made.

More Than a Game Store

At first glance, The Trading Gallery looks like a typical hobby shop. Shelves are filled with popular trading card games like Pokemon, Yu Gi Oh, Magic The Gathering, Weiss Schwarz, One Piece, Union Arena, and more. Players sit at tables shuffling decks, comparing pulls, and discussing strategies.

But spend an hour inside TTG and you will realize something special is happening. People from different backgrounds including students, working professionals, newcomers to Canada, and longtime residents come together through a shared love of games. Conversations start with cards and end with friendships.

According to one of it’s founders Kris Yong, that sense of belonging is intentional.
We wanted to build a space where people feel safe staying late, laughing, learning, and growing together, Yong says. Home is for sleep. TTG is for play.

A Space That Builds Friendships

Every week, TTG hosts tournaments, casual game nights, and community events. Players cheer for each other, trade cards, celebrate wins, and help newcomers learn the rules.

One tradition at TTG is the winning Polaroid wall. Champions take a photo that gets added to a binder of memories. What started as a small idea became something meaningful. Players now ask for copies of their photos to share with friends and family, turning small victories into lifelong keepsakes.

For many customers, TTG became their first friend group in a new city. International students who arrived in Vancouver without knowing anyone found teammates. Young professionals stressed from work found a place to relax. Teenagers discovered mentorship from older players who helped them grow not just in games but in confidence.

Bringing Cultures Together Through Cards

The Trading Gallery reflects Canada’s multicultural identity. Imported products from Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia including the Philippines sit alongside Canadian collectibles. Conversations happen in English, Mandarin, Korean, Japanese, Cantonese, and Taiwanese.

Players share snacks from overseas, teach each other phrases, and celebrate holidays together. In one evening you might see a Pokemon match, hear an anime debate about Weiss Schwarz, and watch friends planning a late night ramen run together.

Why TTG Focused on Players Instead of Only Collectors

While many hobby stores chase high value collectibles and speculation, The Trading Gallery chose a different path. Yong says the team realized early on that what they loved most was not just owning rare cards but playing with them.

We respect collectors, Yong explains. But the joy that kept us coming back was sitting across from a friend, shuffling decks, laughing over bad draws, and celebrating great plays. We wanted a shop where the games themselves were the main event.

That philosophy shaped everything at TTG. Tables were prioritized over display cases. Tournament nights were scheduled alongside product launches. Staff were trained to help new players learn rules, build decks, and feel confident joining their first event.

By focusing on players, TTG built deeper relationships. Customers did not just visit to buy. They stayed to play. They met friends, joined teams, and became regulars who felt ownership in the community. Collectibles still exist at TTG, but they support the experience rather than replace it.

Technology Built by Players for Players

Behind the scenes, The Trading Gallery is powered by a hands-on development team of five people who are building custom tools that connect online shopping, in store play, and community events into one experience.

Instead of relying on generic platforms, TTG built its own ecommerce system, inventory tools, and staff portals. Players can check card availability in real time, browse singles quickly, and register for tournaments easily. Staff can move inventory between locations like TTG Supply and TTG Nest, track popular decks, and respond to customer requests faster.

Yong says the goal was always to make technology feel invisible. We did not want a cold online store. We wanted tech that helps people find cards faster, meet friends easier, and spend more time actually playing.

A Global Wave of TCG Culture

The rise of shops like The Trading Gallery reflects a worldwide growth in trading card game culture. From Japan and Korea to Canada, Europe, and Southeast Asia including the Philippines, organized play communities are expanding rapidly. Major tournaments are streamed online, new games launch every year, and young players are discovering tabletop gaming as a social hobby.

TTG sits at the intersection of this global movement. By bringing in products from Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia including the Philippines, TTG connects players across cultures and languages. For many customers, it is where an international hobby becomes a local friendship.

Kris Yong believes this growth shows something deeper. People everywhere still want real community. Cards just happen to be the excuse that brings us together.

Recognizing the Work Behind the Vision

The growth of The Trading Gallery is closely tied to the dedication of one of its founders, Kristopher Yong. Starting from a small local shop, Yong built TTG into a recognized name in the Canadian trading card community while still staying involved in daily operations, event planning, and customer service.

In the past year alone, TTG packed and shipped more than 5000 customer orders across Canada and beyond. During the same period, the TTG Discord community grew from about 200 members to more than 860 members, reflecting how many players were looking for a place to connect outside the shop as well. TTG also hosted more than 440 games and organized play events across its locations, giving hundreds of players a chance to meet, compete, and learn together. Late nights spent sorting cards, protecting packages, and answering messages became a normal part of life for the team. Staff often stayed until early morning hours to make sure players received their cards safely and on time.

For Yong, those numbers represent more than business success. They show trust from a growing community that believes in TTG. Each package sent out is a reminder that a shop built on friendship and play can also succeed through hard work, consistency, and care for customers. Despite this growth, TTG spent less than 2000 dollars on marketing in the past year. The team chose to keep growth organic and limited social media posts to understand what genuine community interest looked like before committing to large marketing campaigns. Most customers came through word of mouth, local events, and recommendations from friends. Looking ahead, one of its founders, Kristopher Yong says TTG plans to begin a full scale marketing push in mid 2026 after refining its systems, community programs, and product offerings. Yong notes that the team constantly stress tests new ideas, events, and systems before scaling them to make sure the community experience stays strong as TTG grows. Growing Without Losing Heart

TTG success has led to expansion plans including new locations such as TTG Supply and TTG Nest. Yong insists that growth will never come at the cost of the community.

We are not just opening stores, he explains. We are opening homes for collectors and players. Every location will have tables, events, and staff who care about people, not just sales.

The vision is a Canada wide network of game focused community hubs where people can gather, play, and build friendships safely.

Why Spaces Like TTG Matter

Card shops like The Trading Gallery provide important social spaces in a digital age. They give young people safe environments. They create friendships across cultures and generations. They offer a place to relax after work, meet new friends, and share hobbies face to face.

In the Lower Mainland, TTG has shown that community can still be built one card, one conversation, and one friendship at a time.
