PASAY CITY — The Philippine Senate adopted a resolution on Monday, condemning the Chinese embassy’s statements against Filipino officials and institutions who are defending the country’s sovereignty over the West Philippine Sea (WPS).
Principal author Sen. Kiko Pangilinan celebrated the upper chamber’s move on Wednesday, saying the resolution’s adoption is a testament of institutional support for the Department of National Defense (DND) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), who are asserting the rights of the country in the face of fiery statements from Chinese envoys.
“Kailangang tumindig laban sa China at magkaisa sa pagsuporta sa Philippine Coast Guard at Armed Forces of the Philippines, lalo na kapag sila ay inaatake sa gitna ng mga agresibong aksyon ng Beijing sa West Philippine Sea,” said Pangilinan in a post.
(We need to take our stance against China and show collective support for the Philippine Coast Guard and the Armed Forces of the Philippines, especially when they are getting targeted by aggressive actions by Beijing in the West Philippine Sea.)
He added that the resolution seeks not only to support relevant agencies but also affirms the country’s legal claim in its territorial waters, as well as to protect Filipino fisherfolk and Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) personnel against Chinese harassment in the WPS.
The Chinese Embassy, however, said in response that the resolution amounts to nothing but a “political stunt”.
“Some Philippine legislators repeatedly resort to threats and intimidation against Chinese diplomats. They claim they represent public opinion but actually twist facts and mislead the public. The said Senate resolution is nothing but a political stunt,” said Chinese Embassy spokesperson Ji Lingpeng in a statement.
