QUEZON CITY — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced on Tuesday that it will construct a covered walkway between SM North EDSA and Trinoma, after recent pedestrian concerns underscoring the struggle to navigate the pathway.
DOTr Secretary Giovanni Lopez said the directive came from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who aims to alleviate the challenge for passing pedestrians, prioritising convenience and safety.
In coordination with mall operators, the transportation department is also eyeing to connect the planned walkway to the Common Station, giving passengers ‘seamless access’ to MRT-3, LRT-1 and MRT-7 lines. According to DOTr, the Common Station and the MRT-7 are set to be operational by 2027.
“Nakita natin ‘yung sitwasyon sa walkway between the two malls, at grabe talaga ‘yung dinadaanan ng mga pasahero doon. Kapag umuulan, bumabaha pa sa daanan kaya grabeng pasakit talaga sa mga dumadaan, kaya palalagyan natin ng bubong ‘yang walkway,” Lopez said.
(We saw the situation at the walkway between the two malls, and the passengers’ pathway there is truly in a poor state. Whenever it would rain, the pathway would get flooded, thus worsening the pedestrians’ plight; therefore, we will install a roof on the entire walkway.

“The DOTr and the MRT-3 are closely coordinating with the mall operators for the immediate construction of the covered walkway. Tututukan ng DOTr ito para malagyan ng bubong. Hindi dapat magtagal ‘yung ganitong experience ng mga pasahero,” he added.

On the same day, personnel from MRT-3 have reportedly conducted an inspection of the current pathway and have already put temporary cement slabs at sections susceptible to flooding.
