MANILA – The reported death toll due to Typhoon Tino (international name Kalmaegi) has climbed to 66, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Wednesday.
In a message to reporters, the agency said 49 of the reported fatalities were from Cebu, most of them due to fallen debris, landslides and flooding.
One fatality was recorded each in Bohol, Capiz, and Leyte, all attributed to toppled trees, the NDRRMC said. Another death, also in Leyte, was reportedly caused by flooding.
Seven people were also reported killed in the Negros Island Region, two of them from fallen debris.
“The cause [of death] of five others are still being determined,” the NDRRMC said.
Meanwhile, six Philippine Air Force personnel — two pilots and four aircrew members — were killed when the Super Huey chopper they were riding crashed in Agusan del Sur on Tuesday afternoon.
Aside from the reported fatalities, the NDRRMC also said 13 persons are still missing in Cebu, along with 13 others in La Castella, Negros Occidental.
Tino, the country’s 20th cyclone this year, battered a large part of the Visayas and some areas in Mindanao and Southern Luzon, causing widespread destruction.
The typhoon is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Wednesday night or early Thursday morning, according to the 11 a.m. bulletin of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration on Wednesday.
