Louise Bridge reopening ahead of schedule

Winnipeg, MB – Starting Friday morning, traffic will once again flow over the Louise Bridge – weeks earlier than anticipated.

We initially closed the bridge on May 23, 2025 for its annual inspection and maintenance. The inspection uncovered corrosion that needed to be fixed before the bridge could reopen. We expected that work to conclude by end of July, but extended the closure to mid-September upon finding additional defects on the bridge.

Crews worked hard to complete the additional repairs more than three weeks ahead of schedule.

“Thank you to Winnipeggers for their patience while this important work was completed,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. “I’m pleased that crews were able to finish repairs ahead of schedule so the Louise Bridge can reopen safely for both vehicles and pedestrians.”

As maintenance work concludes on the 114-year-old Louise Bridge, staff continue to work on its long-term rehabilitation plan.

A preliminary design to extend the structure’s life by 25-40 years was approved in principle by Council in 2024. The estimated budget for that work is $40 million. Rehabilitation work could start as early as 2026, pending budget approvals.

“With funding approved and design work underway, we’re moving forward on a rehabilitation plan that will extend the life of the Louise Bridge,” said Councillor Janice Lukes, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Public Works. “These repairs were a necessary step in ensuring the bridge continues to serve Winnipeggers safely and reliably while longer-term plans are advanced.”

Staff are also continuing work to decommission the Arlington Bridge. That structure was unexpectedly closed to both vehicles and pedestrians in late 2023.

Council amended the 2025 budget to add $17 million for demolition of the bridge and another $5 million to start final design work for a new Arlington bridge.
