MANILA – The Anti-Terrorism Council (ATC) said Thursday the repatriation of former lawmaker Arnolfo Teves Jr. substantiates the country’s commitment against terrorism and impunity.
“This return (of Teves) marks a crucial development in our nation’s fight against terrorism, impunity, and politically motivated violence,” the council said in a statement.
“We commend the Government of Timor-Leste for recognizing the seriousness of the charges and their potential impact on regional stability. Their decision aligns with the spirit of international cooperation and ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) solidarity in upholding the rule of law.”
The ATC expressed its support for the coordinated efforts of the Department of Justice, the Bureau of Immigration, and the National Bureau of Investigation in securing the deportation and repatriation of Teves, who has been designated as the leader of a terrorist group.
Teves, along with 12 others, were designated under ATC Resolution 43 (2023) as leaders of a terrorist organization – pursuant to Section 25 of Republic Act 11479, also known as the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020 — for the “orchestrated killings and acts of violence in Negros Oriental.”
The ATC emphasized that this designation resulted from an extensive and evidence-based evaluation conducted in coordination with law enforcement and intelligence agencies.
“Together with our partner agencies, we will ensure that those who threaten peace, order, and democracy are held accountable. Walang lugar ang terorismo sa Bagong Pilipinas (There’s no room for terrorism under the New Philippines),” it said.
