MANILA – Senator Grace Poe on Friday underscored the need for ethical, inclusive, and innovative artificial intelligence (AI) systems, emphasizing the urgency of governance as AI continues to reshape industries, economies, and households.
In a news release, Poe warned against hastily enacted legislation, urging careful deliberation on pending AI-related measures in the Senate.
“It’s very important that we don’t just rush and pass a law without actual proper consultation,” she said, noting that while AI should not be overregulated, some form of oversight is necessary.
“Definitely, AI has to be somewhat regulated because, for example, we know that they use AI now to impersonate people and to scam people.
But we also use AI in research and many other ways by which we are able to improve our lives,” she added.
The government has underscored the evolving AI landscape and cited its importance on economic growth, directing, among others, the Department of Trade and Industry to help micro, small, and medium enterprises use this system to boost the sector.
