Day of Mourning Declared for Lapu-Lapu Festival Victims
By Philippine Canadian Inquirer
The Province of British Columbia has officially declared Friday, May 2, 2025, as a Day of Remembrance and Mourning to honor the victims of the tragic incident at the Lapu-Lapu Day Festival in Vancouver.
The declaration follows the devastating event on April 26, where 11 individuals lost their lives and dozens were injured when a vehicle drove into the festival crowd.
Premier David Eby expressed profound sorrow, stating, “Our hearts are with the victims, their families, and the entire Filipino community during this difficult time.”
Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the city’s commitment to supporting those affected and reviewing safety measures for public events.
Community members are invited to sign condolence books available at Vancouver City Hall and the British Columbia Parliament Buildings.
A memorial mass was held at the Holy Rosary Cathedral, where attendees gathered to pay their respects and find solace in shared grief.
The suspect, 30-year-old Kai-Ji Adam Lo, has been charged with multiple counts of second-degree murder and is undergoing a mental health assessment.
As the community mourns, plans are underway for a permanent memorial to honor the lives lost and ensure such a tragedy is never forgotten.
