Pope Francis, the first Latin American and Jesuit Pope, died at the age of 88, the Vatican confirmed Monday morning. This occurred on Easter Monday, a significant day in the Christian calendar.
According to Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Camerlengo of the Vatican, the Pope passed away at 7:35 a.m. local time after battling a respiratory illness. “The Bishop of Rome has returned to the Father’s house,” Farrell said in an official video statement.
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, Pope Francis made history when he became the 266th pontiff in 2013, following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. He led the Catholic Church for 12 years, becoming known for his progressive views, humility, and focus on the poor and marginalized.
During his time as Pope, he focused on climate change, social justice, and making changes within the Church. He encouraged discussions about updating old Church traditions and promoted compassion and inclusivity.
The Vatican will share more details about the funeral plans and the upcoming conclave.
