ROME – Pope Francis on Wednesday made his first public appearance since being discharged from the hospital, expressing gratitude to the medical team who cared for him during a recent bout with life-threatening pneumonia.
The 88-year-old pontiff met privately with about 70 staff and administrators from Rome’s Cattolica University and the Policlinico Gemelli hospital, where he spent 38 days recovering.
The meeting took place in the rooms behind the Paul VI Hall at the Vatican.
“Thank you for your service at the hospital. Excellent work – keep it up!” Francis told the group, greeting each person individually, starting with university rector Elena Beccalli.
He also offered a light remark that drew smiles, “When women are in charge, things go well.” (ANSA)
