MANILA – The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) on Tuesday ordered a “full crackdown” on reckless public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers after President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s call for stricter road discipline.

In a statement, LTFRB Chair Teofilo Guadiz III said the crackdown is in response to recent road incidents in Commonwealth Avenue and Valenzuela involving “kamote” PUV drivers who ignore traffic rules and endanger passengers and other motorists.

“The President is right. This has to stop. These drivers are a threat to public safety, and we will take them off the road,” Guadiz said.

The LTFRB is coordinating with the Land Transportation Office (LTO), the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), and local government units (LGU) to identify and penalize erring drivers.

Franchise holders who fail to control their drivers, he said, would face administrative charges in addition to preventive suspensions.

“We are moving now – not after another accident. We’re auditing operators with repeated violations and will revoke franchises, if necessary,” he said.

He said PUV drivers and operators have a responsibility to ensure that public transport is safe.

“Driving a public vehicle is a responsibility. If you’re reckless, you’re out because it poses danger to people’s lives,” he said.

He also called on commuters and motorists to report reckless drivers through the LTFRB’s official channels, such as its 24/7 hotline at 1342 or send a message to the LTFRB’s official Facebook page.
