MANILA – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Wednesday reminded candidates in the May 12 midterm elections to pause campaigning and observe the solemnity of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

Comelec Chairperson George Erwin Garcia said campaigning on these days is prohibited by law.

“I hope politicians will respect these religious activities and religious things that we consider important for our Catholic Christians. That is in the election law itself, that is an election offense, so that is also a ground to disqualify the candidate,” the poll body chief said in a radio interview.

Garcia, meanwhile, said candidates can resume campaigning on Black Saturday.

He also encouraged the public to report those violating the campaign ban on the two religious holidays.

“Let’s use social media to post what we see is wrong, especially on Thursday and Good Friday, where campaign activities are not allowed.

We also ask all those who are vying for national and local posts to be wary of the actions of their opponents,” Garcia said.

Campaigning on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday is prohibited under Section 5 (b) of Republic Act No. 7166 or the Synchronized National and Local Elections Act.

Violators may be penalized with imprisonment of not less than one year but not more than six years which shall not be subject to probation; deprivation of the right to suffrage; and disqualification to hold public office.
