A second Filipino has died after the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that hit Myanmar on March 28. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed the victim’s identity. This person was one of four Filipinos who were reported missing after the Sky Villa condominium in Mandalay collapsed.
While the DFA refrained from disclosing further details at the family’s request, the confirmation adds to growing concerns over the safety of overseas Filipinos in disaster-prone regions. The identity of the first Filipino fatality, Francis Aragon, was confirmed a day earlier.

This tragedy highlights how vulnerable migrant communities are during natural disasters. It also shows how critical diplomatic channels are in responding to crises. With climate change and earthquakes becoming more common in Southeast Asia, there is an urgent need for better international planning and support for consular services.
