NDP and Green are the only parties to announce candidates for the upcoming federal election

It’s official.

Canadians will head to the polls on April 28, and Nunavummiut will cast their ballot to decide who will represent them in Ottawa.

There is only one riding in Nunavut.

So far, the NDP and Greens are the only political parties that have declared their candidates for the seat.

Lisa Gunderson

Lisa Gunderson, deputy leader of the B.C. Greens, is the Green Party’s candidate vying to represent Nunavut in Ottawa.

Gunderson’s bio on the BC Greens’ website points to her political experience as a campaign volunteer, panellist and member of diversity and equity committees.

“She has consulted with various ministries and served on various local and national boards and advisory committees, making her a respected and influential figure within our party and the greater community.”

Gunderson ran in the B.C. riding of Oak Bay-Gordon Head in last year’s provincial election, finishing third behind winner Diana Gibson of the NDP and the Conservative’s Stephen Andrew.

Lori Idlout

NDP candidate Lori Idlout will be seeking re-election as Nunavut’s MP. Idlout was first elected in 2021 as Nunavut’s MP after her predecessor Mumilaaq Qaqqaq did not seek re-election after one term in Parliament.

Idlout says she wants to advocate for sustainable investments into the territory.

“Because investments don’t come soon enough or … are only short-term, there’s no long-term sustainable funding,” Idlout said. “[It] makes it feel like [Nunavummiut] are the last priority.”

CBC News has also reached out to the Liberal and Conservative parties asking about their candidates for the Nunavut riding.

In an email, Liberal Party of Canada communications director Parker Lund wrote that “we’ve had a number of community leaders express interest in running”, but no one has yet been confirmed as the Liberal candidate.

The Conservatives have yet to respond.
