MANILA – The Department of Education (DepEd) marked this year’s International Day of Education (IDE) by emphasizing the responsible and ethical integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in learning.
Held at the DepEd Central Office on Friday, the event, themed “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation,” highlighted the agency’s efforts to leverage AI and educational technology (EdTech) to enhance learning experiences.
During the event, the DepEd reinforced its commitment to equipping students with the skills to use AI responsibly, aligning with President Ferdinand R.
Marcos Jr.’s vision of harnessing Filipino potential.
“Let us champion the use of AI as a tool for empowerment, not replacement,” DepEd Undersecretary and chief of staff lawyer Fatima Lipp Panontongan said.
“Together, let us create a future where technology amplifies human potential rather than diminishes it.”
The DepEd also showcased its partnership with Khan Academy’s Khanmigo, an AI-powered educational assistant, as a key initiative to address learning challenges and advance education in the country.
Observed annually on Jan. 24, the IDE promotes access to education for all and encourages actions to improve youth engagement in learning.
The 2025 celebration included representatives from United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) INNOTECH, Department of Science and Technology, UNICEF Philippines, and UNESCO Jakarta.
Exhibits on AI and education featured contributions from EdTech partners such as FELTA, CISTEM, STI, Samsung, Unilab, and iAcademy.
“It is our duty to ensure that the next generation — Gen Z, Alpha, Beta, and beyond — is nurtured, informed, and inspired,” Panontongan said, underscoring the importance of preparing future generations.
