IKEA Introduces Latest Iteration of the Nytillverkad Collection, Showcasing Iconic Designs Inspired by the ’60s and Early ’70s
IKEA proudly continues its celebration of the enduring appeal of iconic products through the revitalized Nytillverkad collection. Scheduled for release in stores from January 2024, this latest edition reintroduces the relaxed and playful designs of the ’60s and early ’70s, reimagined to suit the contemporary needs of homes today. The collection highlights renowned IKEA designers Karin Mobring and Gillis Lundgren, showcasing their influential and timeless pieces.
With the Nytillverkad collection, IKEA reintroduces iconic designs in fresh colors and materials, aligning them with the current preferences and aspirations of today’s consumers. Drawing inspiration from an era defined by youth culture, pop music, and political movements, the third edition takes a nostalgic journey back to a time when IKEA pioneered the use of materials like painted particleboard and plastic. Characterized by bold shapes, optimistic colors, comfortable seating, and soft high-pile rugs, this collection invites design enthusiasts to revisit the distinctive furnishing style of that era.
Karin Mobring, the trailblazing first female IKEA designer, left an indelible mark on IKEA’s aesthetic. Hired in 1964 after Ingvar Kamprad discovered her wooden armchair at the Stockholm Furniture Fair, Mobring became one of IKEA’s most prolific designers by the 1970s. Her iconic CROMI side table makes a reappearance in the Nytillverkad collection, now named BAGGBODA with a white or light-yellow tabletop and a chrome-plated frame.
Gillis Lundgren, a visionary designer who joined IKEA in 1954, played a crucial role in shaping the company’s trajectory. Known for his multifaceted contributions, Lundgren’s MILA armchair is reimagined as the DYVLINGE swivel armchair, while the spacious PUCK armchair from 1969 is reintroduced as SOTENÄS.
The collection also pays homage to contemporary Swedish designers, Sven Fristedt and Ehlén Johansson, showcasing Fristedt’s eye-catching patterns on STRECKFLY cushion covers and ÄNGSFIBBLA pre-cut fabric. Johansson, a Red Dot Design Award winner, contributes the sleek and subtle SKOGSTUNDRA vase with a high neck designed to support cut flowers.
Johan Ejdemo, Global Design Manager at IKEA of Sweden, reflects on the resurgence of vintage furniture, acknowledging the growing demand for IKEA products that have become collector’s favorites. Ejdemo emphasizes that the Nytillverkad collection embodies democratic design, offering timeless pieces that combine beauty, function, sustainability, affordability, and enduring quality.
The eagerly anticipated third launch of the Nytillverkad collection will be available in IKEA stores worldwide from January 2024.
