MANILA – Residents living near the restive Mayon Volcano in Albay are reminded to wear masks to protect themselves from the harmful effects of ashfall.

Face masks must be worn to cover the nose and mouth as volcanic ash can affect the respiratory system, eyes and overall health, the Department of Health said Wednesday in a public advisory.

“Maaaring gumamit ng medical at surgical masks, dust masks, o mamasa-masang panyo (You can use medical and surgical masks, dusk masks or damp handkerchief),” it said.

“Siguraduhin ang supply ng gamot para sa may hika at allergy at gamitin ayon sa payo ng doktor (Ensure enough supply of medicine for asthma and allergy and use them according to doctor’s advice).”

Goggles may also be worn for eye protection.

“Iwasan gumamit ng contact lenses at gumamit muna ng salamin kung maari (Avoid using contact lenses and use eyeglasses instead if possible),” the DOH said. “Huwag kamutin o kuskusin ang mga mata.

Kung nairita ang mga mata, banlawan lamang ito gamit ang umaagos at maligamgam na tubig (Don’t scratch your eyes.

If the eyes are irritated, wash them with flowing and warm water).”

People having difficulty breathing and troubles with eyesight are encouraged to immediately consult a physician.

Mayon, under Alert Level 3, had four pyroclastic density current events on Wednesday morning.
