Marcos supports review of curriculum to address jobs mismatch
MANILA – President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is fully supportive of proposals to look at the country’s education curriculum in order to equip students with skills required by different industries and address the existing job mismatch.
In a statement, Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles said concerns about workers’ skills, competencies, and the way the Philippines produces its graduates were raised during the weekly Cabinet meeting on Tuesday.
“Among the suggestions to address these standing issues include a reform of the current curriculum since the rise of automation has posed a threat to many jobs,” Angeles said.
The President presided the meeting via teleconferencing since he is still in isolation after testing positive for Covid-19.
Marcos told his Cabinet members that basic education skills and knowledge must be improved to prepare students as they pursue a higher level of learning.
“That’s exactly what is happening. That is why we have to look at the curriculum as well. Not only of TESDA (Technical Education and Skills Development Authority), but also even our diploma courses,” Marcos said.
In his PowerPoint presentation, Trade Secretary Alfredo Pascual underscored the need for a review of the country’s curriculum, particularly basic and tertiary education.
Basic skills must be instilled in students, Pascual said, adding that the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is ramping up efforts to help universities develop micro-credentialing systems to catch up with fast-changing technological advancements.
“We’re developing or helping universities develop this system of micro-credentialing because technology is changing very fast. There is a need for workers to update themselves, to reskill or upskill,” Pascual said.
Pascual cited the case of the National University of Singapore which offers focused but short courses on certain technology and awards students with micro-credential, which is similar to a diploma but for a short course.
The DTI secretary also suggested the need for the Philippines to send Filipino teachers abroad for training. “Vietnam, for example, sends teachers to the United States and Europe for advanced studies,” he said.
To address the current job mismatch, Pascual said the DTI should collaborate closely with the Department of Education, Commission on Higher Education, and TESDA.
“We will also collaborate with the said entities or authorities, the skills development, reskilling and upskilling of Philippine workforce through our own Philippine Skills Framework,” Pascual said. (OPS)

nakakataba ng puso na appreciate ng ating pangulong marcos kung ano ang kahalagahan ng ating mga kursong kinuha kaya’t tinutupad nya na kung ano ang ating mga kursong pinaghirapan ay ito ang ating makung trabaho

Well,if that is true, then good job to PBBM.I hope this isn’t just a mere promise but I hope this will really happen talaga kasi it would be very beneficial to our country especially that job mismatch is widespread here in our country. We all know that job mismatch has negative effects including sa work productivity,at sa macroeconomic /microeconomic level. So it’s good that BBM has come up with this idea kasi job mismatch is a burden rin talaga sa bansa natin so maybe it’s time for it to be addressed.

As he should. ‘Wag tanggalin ang K-12 kung babalakin man nya. Ang hirap kaya tumataas unemployment sa Pinas ang daming job opening, kulang naman sa skills.

This is a common problem that the Philippines faces when it comes to job opportunities. A lot of applicant and employees were working on a job that is very different from the course they took during their college year.it is also one of the reason why a lot of people are unemployed because a lot of job opportunities are mismatch from the course they took in college. Hence addressing this issue will surely help a lot of future applicants in seeking future jobs. Aside from this the government must also address necessary proceedings regarding the jobs for fresh graduate because most of the company were looking for those who have experienced so utilizing the changes in curriculum to meet the necessary standards of some companies is really a big help.

This will strengthen and enhance the quality education that the country have. But for me mas pagtu-unan nila ng pansin yung application part of learning dapat ito ay real-life experience related and also yung gagamit nila in their chosen profession.

I believe it’s about time for the DepEd and other sectors of the government to take a look if the current curriculum is still going to work for the future of the students, ever since the pandemic happened our lifestyles has been change to 180° and I believe not just jobs or livelihood would be affected by this sudden crisis. Jobs that are affected by the pandemic has now different demands and if the government can somehow change the curriculum taking consideration of all the things that happened after the pandemic there’s a great change the the future generation can adjust and alleviate the crisis of the country. I perceived that the old curriculum is lacking and would need revisions for it to useful and beneficial to our young ones.
