September 21 protesters urged to observe Covid-19 protocols
MANILA – Groups of protesters who would converge in the streets to mark the 49th anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law Tuesday are reminded to strictly follow the health protocols.
In a video message, Philippine National Police chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar said he has ordered police units to be on alert and ensure that health protocols are observed.
“The PNP respects the holding of protests and we also expect the protesters to follow the rules to ensure the safety of everyone at the time of pandemic,” he said in Filipino, even as he urged groups to use online platforms instead of voicing out their sentiments.
Various groups, mostly militant members, are expected to join the protests at the Liwasang Bonifacio in Manila from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and other parts of the country.
A caravan will also be held from Quezon City to Manila.
Eleazar assured that police would observe maximum tolerance during protest rallies.
About 4,000 policemen have been deployed in Metro Manila to ensure peace and order, National Capital Region Police Office Director Maj. Gen. Vicente Danao said.
This day in 1972 marks the start of Martial Law, enacted through Proclamation 1081 and declared two days later on Sept. 23.
