Liza Soberano, Shay Mitchell talk about ‘Trese,’ similarities with titular heroine
People are only counting down a few days before the premiere of the much-awaited animated adaptation of “Trese” on Netflix.
While they await for it, actresses Liza Soberano and Shay Mitchell have thoughts to share about “Trese” and the titular character that they will be voicing.
Liza and Shay will be giving soul to Alexandra Trese, a detective who faces off malevolent supernatural beings in the Philippines, in the Filipino and English language versions of the series, respectively.
Liza recalled that she was “blown away” when the script was given to her.
“It’s beautifully told when it’s in Filipino and it has more of a sentimental value to me and more of a connection to me,” she said in the almost three-minute behind-the-scenes video released by Netflix.
Being the voice of Alexandra, Shay said she gets the opportunity to “play such a strong female” character and be able to work with “an incredible cast.”
The voice actresses also found that they share similar traits with the protagonist. Liza can be in tune with Alexandra because she said they are both “very courageous when it comes to people that we love,” while Shay perceived Alexandra as a “very determined” woman like her.
Just like other fans, Shay is also thrilled about the series “just to see it come from words on a page to then seeing it be artwork and then voicing over to this character that I’ve grown to love so much.”
“Trese” is based on the Filipino graphic novel of the same name created by Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo. Last May, the streaming giant released the trailer of the animated series which featured the Philippine mythological creatures such as “nuno” and “tiyanak.”

“We have our own characters here in the Philippines, our own superstitious beliefs and I just wanna share that with the world,” Liza said.
As to what to expect in the series, Shay assured, “Definitely gonna have a lot of twists and turns, so don’t think you know what’s coming because you don’t.”
“Trese” will be available on Netflix on June 11.
On May 29, 13 days before its premiere, Netflix Philippines dropped a 13-second teaser of “Trese’s” official soundtrack, “Paagi,” by UDD.
