Toni Gonzaga takes lead role in PH adaptation of ‘My Sassy Girl’
The Philippines is going to have an adaptation of the hit South Korean movie “My Sassy Girl” where Filipino actress Toni Gonzaga will star.
The actress’s film company, TinCan Films, announced this on its social media accounts, revealing some photos of Toni’s scenes in the remake of the movie.
“In celebration of its 20th Anniversary, this year we will relive the classic Korean RomCom with its Philippine adaptation,” TinCan said.
“On her birthday, we are proud to announce Toni Gonzaga is Philippines’ My Sassy Girl,” it added.
Following the confirmation, some netizens could not hide their excitement, with many of them saying that Toni can indeed pull off the lead role. Toni’s sister, Alex Gonzaga, also believes that the actress is the “perfect choice,” according to her comment on TinCan’s announcement on Instagram.
Other details, such as when will be the film’s release date and who will be Toni’s leading man, are yet to be revealed.
TinCan’s confirmation of Toni’s role in the Philippine adaptation of “My Sassy Girl” was made on Wednesday, January 20, as the actress marked her 37th birthday.
Her husband, Paul Soriano, posted a short greeting to the actress, saying, “Happy birthday to My Sassy Girl” and then tagging his wife’s Instagram account.
Alex also greeted her sister on Instagram where she thanked Toni for taking care of her.
“Most of the time I would hate you for being so overly protective of me but would always end up loving you more because I would realize you just want the best for me,” she wrote.
In her vlog titled, “My Birthday Revelation,” Toni shared that she first watched “My Sassy Girl” in 2006. She was in Pampanga at that time for the filming of the romantic-comedy “You Are the One” which was directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina.
“Sabi ni direk Cathy, ‘panoorin mo ‘yung My Sassy Girl.’ Tapos sabi ni direk Cathy, ‘yan ang peg namin sayo. Dapat ganyan ka, may pagka-feisty (Director Cathy said, ‘watch My Sassy Girl.’ Then she said, ‘That is what we wanted for you. You should be like that, with a touch of being feisty),’” she recalled.
Two decades after the film was released, Toni said it was a “big blessing” for her to be given the chance to be part of the movie’s adaptation.
It was Korean actors Jun Ji-hyun and Cha Tae-hyun who originally starred in the film which was released in 2001. The story between the actors’ roles began when they met at a train station, where Cha Te-hyun’s character saved Jun Ji-hyun’s character from getting hit by the train.
