‘Parasite’ bags 4 Oscars including ‘Best Picture’
South Korean film, ‘Parasite’, made a historic win as the first non-English movie to win the most coveted ‘Best Picture’ Category, beating ‘Joker’, ‘1917’, and ‘Little Women’ among other titles in the prestigious 92nd Academy Awards on Sunday, February 9, 2020.
The satirical-thriller film which was nominated in 6 categories had a total of 4 Oscar wins including best international feature, best screenplay and best director for Bong Joon Ho, who triumphed over Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, Sam Mendez, and Todd Phillips.

“If the Academy allows, I would like to get a Texas chainsaw, split the award into five and share it with all of you,” Bong says in his humorous speech that also gave tribute to the other directors nominated. “Just to be nominated was a huge honor. I never thought I would win,”
The genre-bending social satire film also won best original screenplay, to which Bong shared the award with fellow Parasite co-writer Han Jin Won.
“A very opportune moment in history is happening right now,” said Parasite producer Kwak Sin Ae and thanked the Korean viewers of the film for “never hesitating to give us straightforward opinions that made us never about to be complacent, and to keep pushing the envelope.”
Parasite is about an impoverished family that slowly infiltrated the lives of a rich family and is also the first Asian film to win an Oscar, a historical moment for the Korean film industry and the Academy Awards for successfully diversifying the nominees.
In a string of local and international awarding ceremonies, Parasite has won over 50 trophies, including the “Palme d’Or” in last year’s Cannes Film Festival.
“Thank you. I will drink until next morning. Thank you,” said Bong in English as he concluded his speech for Best Director.
