SWS finds 96% of Filipinos entering 2020 with ‘hope’
Bidding farewell to 2019, majority of Filipinos are entering 2020 full of hope, according to the latest survey of the Social Weather Stations (SWS) published on its website on Friday, December 27.
Results of the survey showed that 96 percent of Filipinos are welcoming the new year with “hope” rather than “fear.” This figure is four points higher than the 92 percent in 2018 and also tied the record-high level recorded in 2017, the SWS said.
It noted that hope for the new year rose in all areas except in Mindanao.
From 96 percent in 2018, new year hope in Balance Luzon went up to a new record-high 99 percent in 2019.
It also increased in Visayas and Metro Manila from 79 percent to 97 percent and from 94 percent to 96 percent, respectively.
But in Mindanao, it slightly went down from 94 percent in 2018 to 90 percent in 2019.
The pollster said hope for the new year has always been high since it was first asked in 2000. From the 87 percent achieved in that year, it rose to 88 percent in 2001 and 95 percent in 2002 before it eased to 90 percent in 2003, 81 percent in 2004, and 85 percent in 2005.
From 2006 to 2008. it ranged from 91 percent to 92 percent, and increased to 89 percent in 2009. In 2010, it rose to 93 percent. Since then, hope for the new year has been staying at 90s levels, reaching as high as 96 percent in 2017 and 2019, the SWS noted.
While 96 percent of Filipinos are hopeful this coming year, four percent are welcoming 2020 with fear.
This is four points lower than the eight percent in 2018 and matched the record-low levels in 2017 and 2011.
New Year resolutions
The survey also found out that only 33 percent of Filipinos made a new year’s resolution in 2019, compared from the 46 percent in 2017.
Of this figure, three percent said “all or nearly all” of their new year’s resolutions have been or will be fulfilled, seven percent said “most” of them, 10 percent said “a few,” and three percent said “almost none or none.”
The SWS said the decline in the overall number of those who made new year’s resolutions was due to the decline in all areas.
It fell from 47 percent in 2017 to 29 percent in Metro Manila, from 45 percent to 29 percent in Visayas, 53 percent to 39 percent in Mindanao, and 43 percent to 32 percent in Balance Luzon.
The survey was done by the SWS from December 13 to 16 using face-to-face interviews of 1,200 adults nationwide. It has sampling error margins of plus-minus three percent for national percentages, and plus-minus six percent each for Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
