MANILA— Filipinos residing in Chile are advised to remain vigilant and stay indoors in the wake of the state of emergency declared in several cities across the South American nation.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs reiterates the advisory issued by the Philippine Embassy in Santiago for Filipinos in Chile to take necessary precautions in view of the declaration of a State of Emergency in Grand Santiago on 19 October 2019,” DFA Assistant Secretary Eduardo Meñez said Wednesday.

The state of emergency is said to last for 15 days and has since been extended to Chacabuco, Puente Alto, San Bernardo, Concepcion, Valparaiso, Iquique, Maipu, and other provinces.

“Amidst the ongoing violent protests, Filipinos are advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel to affected areas, specifically in central Santiago and areas around sub metro and bus stations,” the agency advised.

According to reports, at least 15 civilians have been killed since a nationwide protest against high costs of living erupted in the country and violent clashes ensued.

The DFA said no Filipino has been reported affected by the ongoing protests, citing official information from Ambassador to Chile Ma. Teresita Daza.

To date, there are around 800 overseas Filipino workers in Chile, the majority of whom are residing in the capital.

The DFA, through the embassy, said it will continue to monitor developments in Santiago and provide advisory on the peace and security situation in Chile, when necessary.

Filipinos needing assistance, on the other hand, are urged to contact the embassy Hotline number at +56-94-272-0320.
