The Chinese Embassy in the Philippines is seeking justice over the death of a Chinese worker who was found dead, handcuffed in Las Piñas City.

In a statement on Monday, August 12, the embassy said it “urges relevant departments of the Philippine Government to bring the perpetrators to justice through an objective, fair and thorough investigation, and continue to take concrete and effective measures to protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese citizens in the Philippines.”

The embassy said it had been “closely following” the death of the 27-year-old Chinese national, identified as Yang Kang, who fell to his death from the sixth floor of a building in Pamplona Dos, Las Piñas City last week.

In a report by GMA, security footage showed the Chinese national peering out of the window first before he detached its grills and climbed out. A security guard found Kang’s lifeless body sprawled across the street. The Las Piñas police suspected that Kang was being held prisoner by his employer over unpaid debts.

“Ito pong biktima ay meron pong pagkakautang doon sa kanyang employer. Sinisingil siya ng kanyang employer at sabi naman siya  siya po ay magbabayad (The victim was indebted to his employer. His employer was asking for the payment and the former told him that he will pay),” Las Piñas police Colonel Simnar Gran was quoted as saying in the report.

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo earlier said the Philippine government will not allow any illegal act committed against foreign workers in the country, which the Chinese embassy has welcomed.

“The Chinese Embassy highly appreciate the Palace’s call to put a stop to these illegal acts, as well as the commitment to protecting the safety of Chinese citizens in the Philippines,” it said.
