LAOAG CITY — Students and youth volunteers from different parts of the province gathered on Friday at the Taoid museum to help raise awareness about climate change and how they can mitigate its impact.
On the same day, organizers led by the Movement Against Plastic Pollution, in partnership with SwitchPH and with the support from the provincial government of Ilocos Norte and Sangguniang Kabataan, joined a silent protest at the Aurora Park this city to express their concern to protect the environment.
While holding banners and placards about climate change, around 53 volunteers joined 14 other areas in the Philippines who participated in the second International Youth Strike for Climate.
“Climate change is a global emergency. It is our duty to help our planet recover and protect it for the future generation,” said Patrizia Dacanay-Diaz, who expressed admiration on the number of youth volunteers who participated in the historic event.
In Ilocos Norte, several youth volunteers continue to conduct clean-up drives in riversides and shorelines, while urging everyone to prevent single-use plastics.
Just after the election period, the same group of youth volunteers collected tarpaulins and other election paraphernalia for recycling.
“We hope to raise awareness regarding climate change and influence a lot of people to be more conscious about our lifestyle,” the organizers said, as they thanked participants composed of representatives from the Rotaract, Boy Scouts of the Philippines-Laoag City as well as public and private schools in the province, among others.
