Negros goes for clincher against Cebu
MANILA — Ceres Negros looks to finally seal its second straight Philippines Football League title as it takes on Global Cebu again on Wednesday night at the Rizal Memorial Stadium here.
Negros, leading by 18 points against Iloilo in the league table, only needs a draw in its 7 p.m. battle with Cebu to complete a back-to-back.
If the club gets its needed result, Negros will become the first team to successfully defend its first division title since Air Force completed a two-peat in the defunct UFL in 2010 and 2011.
Interestingly, the AFP-based club, which is set to join the de facto second-tier WFL Elite League, did the trick with a draw against Cebu as well.
If recent history is to be used as basis, Negros is a huge cinch to not just hold Cebu to a draw, but even beat it as the former mauled the latter, 7-1, in their recent meeting on Saturday night.
With Laguna beating Iloilo earlier Saturday in Biñan, Negros can officially clinch the title as early as Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Davao looks to solidify its hold of the third place as it goes up against Marikina at the PFF National Training Center in Carmona at 3 p.m.
