TORONTO —  A fire at one of Toronto’s historic buildings on Monday evening may have been deliberately set.

Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg says a fire alarm went off at Old City Hall just after 8 p.m. in the downtown building across from the current city hall.

He says after crews quickly got the fire under control, firefighters had “cause to believe” that the cause of the blaze is considered suspicious.

Fire officials say there a significant amount of water damage caused by sprinklers going off inside the building.

No injuries were reported.

The building opened in September 1899 and currently houses several provincial courts.
