SoKor knocks out Malditas for last FIFA WWC spot
MANILA — A five-goal shutout was what South Korea needed to defeat the Philippines for fifth place and the last ride to the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The South Koreans eliminated the Malditas from World Cup contention with a 5-0 drubbing in their consolation game in Amman, Jordan early Tuesday (Philippine Time).
While Kearra Bastes-Jones proved to be a thorn for the Korean side for most of the first half, a Jang Sel-Gi goal in the 34th minute turned out to be the breakthrough as the squad pulled away from there.
Lee Min-A made it 2-0 just before halftime, while Sel-Gi found Lim Seon-Joon for the 3-0 count in the 56th minute.
Cho So-Hyun then put on a show in the end, scoring on a header in the 66th minute and finishing off the Malditas with her second goal in the 84th minute.
Despite the loss, the Malditas’ sixth-place finish is their best record in the tournament so far.
