Chicano, Torres finish third in Powerman Asian Duathlon Championships

MANILA — Southeast Asian Games silver medalist John Leerams Chicano and Monica Torres finished third in their respective divisions in the Powerman Asia Duathlon Championships held at Putrajaya, Malaysia over the weekend.

Chicano clocked 2:47:26 behind Thomas Bruins of the Netherlands (2:38:17) and Australian Matt Smith, who also registered 2:47:26 in the men’s division.

Torres, on the other hand, finished the run-bike-run race in 3:06:42 in the women’s division which was dominated by Anna Eberhardt-Halasz of Hungary (2:54:04).

Miriam Van Reijen of the Netherlands placed second with a time of 3:04:04. Bruins has collected his third straight title while Eberhardt-Halasz is a first-timer in the tournament which has attracted 3,756 athletes from 41 countries.

Meanwhile, Chicano and Torres were crowned champions in the middle-distance division.

Filipinos Emmanuel Comendador (2:51:54) and Raymund Torio (2:55:45) finished second and third, respectively in the men’s division while Airi Sawada of Japan (3:18:04) was second followed by Filipino Jelsie Sabado (3:32:43) in the women’s division.

The next leg of the Powerman tournament will be hosted by Indonesia from April 7-8.
