MANILA — While there are agencies designed to respond and help during times of calamities, ordinary Filipinos must also do their part to safeguard themselves and others during times of disasters.

This was emphasized by DND Secretary Delfin Lorenzana during the 19th Gawad Kalasag National Awarding Ceremony held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Ortigas Center, Pasig City late Monday.

“Yes, there are agencies that serve as our shield — they are in the frontlines during times of calamities. However, they may not be able to reach everyone right away due to factors like excessive number of victims, communication failures, road blockages, and other number of problems that can prevent citizens from receiving emergency services,” he added.

With this, Lorenzana said citizens need to rely on each other for help until emergency services reaches them.

“Therefore, it is absolutely necessary for us citizens to be prepared in the event we are required to safeguard our lives — that is where the importance of disaster risk reduction management,” he added.

Lorenzana added that Filipinos should always be alert as the Philippines is a disaster-prone country.

“As inhabitants of a disaster-prone country, we know too well the negative impact of natural catastrophes like super typhoons, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions. We know too well that we cannot afford to be complacent, and that we should be ready all the time,” he added.
