MANILA – Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Leonor Briones has called on local government units (LGUs) to put up museums in their localities, saying she wishes all Filipino students to have the opportunity to visit museums.

For the education chief, a museum is a good avenue for students to learn as they go through the different artifacts, paintings and other things they can find there.

Briones recently commended the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), describing its structure as beautiful and impressive.

Currently, its main attraction is the “Tree of Life” structure made of glass and aluminum domes that cover the entire courtyard.

“It’s a wonderful thing that children can come and marvel at the paintings of Juan Luna, look at the sculptures, and now, see physical evidence of what we are and what we were in this structure,” she said during the NMNH’s inauguration recently.

DepEd also considers the NMNH’s botanical and zoological exhibits as an informal supplement to classroom learning.

Meanwhile, Briones said putting up museums is also possible through public-private partnerships. As an example, the DepEd cited that the NMNH has partnered with Pilipinas Shell, Mercury Drug Corp., Hyundai Asia Resources, Zuellig Family, Phinman Group, among others.
