Sereno not quitting despite Duterte resignation challenge
MANILA— Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno will not resign from her post amid President Rodrigo Duterte’s call for her to resign with him and Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales, her spokesperson said on Monday.
“The Chief Justice will not resign because she has done nothing unlawful, illegal and impeachable,” lawyer Josa Deinla, one of Sereno’s spokespersons, said in an ambush interview after the filing of a verified rejoinder to lawyer Larry Gadon’s impeachment complaint before the House justice committee.
“Ang gusto niya lang mangyari e makapagpatuloy siya sa paggampan sa kanyang mga tungkulin bilang punong mahistrado ng Korte Suprema (What she wants is for her to continue performing her duties as chief magistrate of the Supreme Court),” Deinla added.
In his speech during the oath-taking of new members of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) in Davao on Saturday, President Duterte dared Morales and Sereno to resign with him.
“I now challenge Carpio to resign with me and itong si Supreme Court Chief Justice,” Duterte said.
President Duterte accused the Chief Justice of being corrupt, while he accused the Ombudsman of employing selective justice.
