Liberal Party lawmakers deny impeach plot vs. Pres. Duterte
MANILA – Lawmakers from the Liberal Party (LP) in the House of Representatives on Tuesday denied allegations of a plot to impeach President Rodrigo Duterte.
In a press conference, Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman, Northern Samar Rep.
Raul Daza and Caloocan Rep. Edgar Erice, all of whom belong to the former ruling party, stressed that there have been no talks or schemes from the LP to go about the impeachment proceedings.
“(There is) no plot from LP to impeach the president. It is the president who might be impeaching himself for the ill-statement or compromising consequences,” Lagman said.
Daza echoed Lagman’s remark, adding that such scenario is impossible since 28 out of the 33 LP members in the House of Representatives belong to the super majority.
“As far as the LP is concerned we have not even talked about impeachment. The constitution said, impeachment process must originate from the House of Representatives,” Daza explained.
Meanwhile, Erice said that an impeachment is not advisable since it would jeopardize the country’s economy as well as possible investments.
“Talks about impeachment should be avoided because it will be bad for the economy. We do not wish the impeachment of the president,” said Erice.
Erice said that while the minority provides checks and balances of the current administration, he assured that they are “on the same boat” with the President toward a better government.
