MANILA—The priority of the next administration is to keep the economy running in high gear for the next six years.

For senatorial aspirant Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, the next administration should accelerate infrastructure development, extend full support to agriculture, and go full-blast in employment generation.

“Poor infrastructure is one of the main reasons we have failed to attract more foreign direct investments as our Southeast Asian neighbors. We must build more roads and bridges to far-flung areas. And we must start building a respectable railway system in each of the main islands to spur trade and commerce,” Romualdez said.

The lawmaker from Leyte, who is on his third and last term, over the weekend said reinvigorating agriculture and giving adequate support services to farmers, including credit and farm-to-market roads, would significantly reduce poverty in the countryside.

Romualdez also cited the need to generate more jobs across the whole spectrum of the economy to reduce the ranks of the unemployed in the country, estimated at no less than 10 million.

“All this will help boost the national economy and uplift the lives of the poor,” he said. One of the biggest business organizations in the country, the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) said recently that it would submit a wish list of five key issues that it wanted the next administration to prioritize.

These will cover infrastructure, agriculture, MSMEs (micro, small and medium enterprises), tourism and education.

Romualdez is running for a seat in the Senate with compassionate governance as his key platform, with jobs, health, education, agriculture and disaster preparedness as main elements.
