DOH confirms 6 cases of HIV/AIDS in Iloilo

ILOILO CITY – The Department of Health (DOH) in Western Visayas confirmed the presence of 14 persons living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) – Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) in the municipality of Pototan, Iloilo.

Christine Mosqueda, DOH nurse coordinator for Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) said that 10 of the 14 persons living with HIV/AIDS in Pototan were confined in the Western Visayas Medical Center (WVMC).

“Those enrolled are availing the antiretroviral drugs and they undergo laboratory and quarterly check-up, “Mosqueda said.

“Their infections were also being managed in the center,” she added.

As of September, Western Visayas has 1,028 recorded cases of HIV/AIDS. Iloilo city has the highest with 263 while the province of Antique has the lowest with 37 cases.

Specifically in Iloilo, Mosqueda said that the municipalities of Pototan and Tigbauan were among the municipalities with the highest number of HIV/AIDS cases.

From January 2013 to August 2015, DOH also recorded 114 deaths in the region caused by HIV/AIDS.
