Toronto stock market opens lower as gold and oil prices slip, U.S. markets up

TORONTO – The Toronto Stock Exchange took a step back in early trading as the price of gold and oil slipped lower.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 16.88 points at 13,300.64 as gold and energy stocks fell.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrials gained 25.06 points at 17,508.07, while the broader S&P 500 index added 1.24 points at 2,054.43.

The Nasdaq advanced 5.95 points at 4,990.57.

On the commodity markets, the December gold contract was down US$5.40 at US$1,078.20, while the December crude oil contract fell 70 cents to US$41.04.

The December contract for natural gas fell 7.4 cents to US$2.311.

The Canadian dollar was up 0.10 of a cent at 75.15 cents U.S.
