‘Heneral Luna’ earns P180M, becomes ‘highest grossing historical film’
MANILA – Now on its third week, historic biopic “Heneral Luna” has been P20 million short to the P200-million box office mark. Its producer and distributor Joji Alonso disclosed that the film has already grossed P180,434,088.
Despite a weak opening, Heneral Luna’s popularity and sales were boosted by word-of-mouth and a strong social media presence.
From earning P15,333,299 in its first week, Alonso shared that the historical epic grossed P44,066,423 in its second week and further reached P104,010,219 in its third week.
“Heneral Luna – P19,565,912 left to reach 200M and break even after grossing another P8,086,507 yesterday. [Please], please continue to support this film!” she said in her Facebook account, adding that the movie has ‘broken norms and patterns and the usual dwindling statistics as each week passes.’
With its earnings still increasing, Heneral Luna has already been regarded as ‘the highest grossing historical film of all time’ in the country, according to its producers.
Jerrold Tarog’s film has also been chosen to be the country’s entry to the 88th Academy Awards for the Best Foreign Language film category.
