MANILA — The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania announces two new financial aid funds for undergraduate Filipino students.

The funds — the Stephen and Maria A. CuUnjieng Scholarship and the Lhuillier-Hess Scholarship –have been established by Stephen T. CuUnjieng and Maria A. CuUnjieng, Jean Henri D. Lhuillier, and Clinton Andrew Campos Hess.

“All of us at Wharton are deeply grateful to the Lhuillier, CuUnjieng, and Hess families for generously endowing these scholarship funds.

As the Wharton School and the University of Pennsylvania become increasingly global, so too must our financial aid offerings. We look forward to identifying talented students from the Philippines who will benefit from the Stephen and Maria A. CuUnjieng Scholarship and the Lhuillier-Hess Scholarship for generations to come,” said Wharton Dean Geoffrey Garrett.

The University of Pennsylvania distinguishes itself as the largest university in the United States with an all-grant policy for undergraduates based on financial need, helping to set the gold standard for financial aid in higher education.

Undergraduate financial aid at the Wharton School is essential to building a community of economically and geographically diverse students. The University’s commitment to financial aid is reiterated in the Penn Compact 2020, a vision from President Amy Gutmann for Penn’s future with goals to increase access to students regardless of their financial circumstances through new scholarship funds, among other initiatives.

The Stephen and Maria A. CuUnjieng Scholarship and the Lhuillier-Hess Scholarship will provide aid with a specific preference for students from the Philippines or of Filipino heritage.

Stephen T. CuUnjieng, Senior Managing Director at Evercore Partners—an investment banking advisory firm—and Chairman of Evercore Asia Limited, and Maria A. CuUnjieng are Wharton MBA alumni from the classes of 1986 and 1987, respectively.

Clinton Andrew Campos Hess is the President and CEO of United Laboratories, a healthcare and pharmaceutical company, and received his undergraduate degree from Wharton in 1993.

Jean Henri D. Lhuillier is President and CEO of PJ Lhuillier Group of Companies and completed a course in Managing Organizational Change at the Wharton School in 1995.

Hess and Lhuillier are brothers in law.

“My Wharton education has given me so much, and now is the time for me to give back,” said Mr. CuUnjieng. “I know this scholarship fund will break down barriers for Filipino students who haven’t had the same opportunities as my wife and me. I also hope that my fund will inspire my fellow alumni, in the Philippines and beyond, to likewise support the next generation of Wharton students.”

“Through my own experiences in executive education programs at Wharton, I have seen the impact of higher education in action,” said Mr. Lhuiller. “I have reached a point of success in my life where I am able to make a difference in someone else’s, and it is my distinct pleasure to provide these opportunities to deserving students.”

Mr. Hess added, “It is important for me to provide a path for young, bright Filipinos to benefit from the Wharton experience that I have so greatly enjoyed.”
