Meralco beats Globalport, earns twice-to-beat advantage
MANILA – Meralco gets the final twice-to-beat advantage after besting out Globalport, 82-70, on Tuesday night to finish the elimination round of the 2015 PBA Philippine Cup at the Cuneta Astrodome.
On Thursday, Meralco will face last conference champions Purefoods, while Alaska will go up against NLEX to mark the start of the quarterfinal rounds.
“The twice-to-beat advantage is really good for us because we’re facing Purefoods and we’re going to need any advantage we can get against the defending champions,” said Norman Black, head coach of Meralco.
Cliff Hodge had a stunning game with 15 points and nine rebounds for the Bolts during their faceoff with Globalport. Sean Anthony also chipped in 16 points and seven rebounds, while Gary David and John Wilson had 13 points apiece to gave Meralco the edge.
During the final minutes of the fourth canto, David nailed a contested jumper and sunk two free throws to give his team a 10-point lead at 1:11.
On the other hand, Stanley Pringle led the Batang Pier with 19 points while Alex Cabagnot had 18 points and five rebounds.
Globalport will face Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings on Friday. Likewise, Talk ‘N Text and Barako Bull will battle it out at the Ynares Center in Antipolo on the same day.
