MANILA — A lawmaker has filed a resolution commending the Island of Palawan, which was declared recently as “Top Island In the World” in the 27th Annual Readers’ Choice Awards of Conde Nast Traveler Magazine.

In House Resolution 1611, Rep. Edgardo R. Masongsong (1-CARE, Party-list) said Palawan’s natural charm has put the Philippines on the map, including the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River, which was declared as one of the new seven natural wonders of the world.

“Palawan, a narrow archipelago of 1,700 islands on the western border of the Philippines, has been widely recognized as a nature sanctuary of the world. It takes pride in its rich and diverse ecosystem with vast rainforests, beautiful coral reefs, majestic mountains, primeval caves, and pristine beaches,” Masongsong said.

According to Conde Nast Traveler, a well-renowned luxury and lifestyle travel magazine founded in 1987, Palawan was voted as “Top Island in the World” in the 27th Annual Readers’ Choice Awards, with a rating of 88.750.

The travel magazine, which has won around 25 National Magazine Awards, further stated that Palawan bested 147 other islands throughout the world, putting the country at the helm of the most beautiful places and tourist attractions.

“Being awarded the Top Island in the World, Palawan brings honor and pride to the country. Such recognition is also a major boost to the Philippines’ abundant potentials in eco-tourism,” Masongsong said.

Masongsong said a commendation to the Island of Palawan is in order to reignite the people’s enthusiasm to protect and preserve its natural charm, worthy of its name as the “Land of Beautiful Safe Harbor.”
