LP divided on constitutional amendment

MANILA — President Aquino’s Liberal Party is divided on whether to amend the Constitution and allow him to seek a second term.

While some devotees of the administration are supporting the idea of amending the Constitution’s political provision, some remain unhappy about it.

“We’re all incredulous and disappointed to say the least. Here we are pushing for a no-nonsense economic Charter change, and it’s gaining public support because there’s no politics involved, and here comes this bombshell that could kill this economic initiative,” a ranking LP lawmaker in the House was quoted in a Philippine Star report.

The lawmaker who refused to be named also felt that Speaker Feliciano Belmonte was a bit disrespected because he earlier vowed to amend only the provisions involving the economy of the country.

He added that Belmonte also said that the amendments will not be tainted by politics.

Meanwhile, another source from the House also told the Philippine Star that Belmonte will be speaking with the president to confirm if he is serious in seeking another term.
